In 1917 Egypt, the infamous Dr. Fu Manchu is pitted against Nayland Smith and the amiable narrator, Dr. Petrie, in an adventurous tale of evil and intrigue
Reviews: (4)
A+ all the way. Very authentic voice, honors the originals. I loved it.
A scientist has disappeared and the knowledge and information he has can end the war in Europe or end the WORLD. It depends on who ends up getting the suitcase he had with him.
Not only do the English want it back, but they wish to keep it out of the hands of both the Germans AND Dr. Fu Manchu.
So, of course, the military get Nayland Smith on the case. With his friend Dr. Petrie he must find the scientist, Professor Brooker, stop the Si Fan from getting the secret of the Midnight Sun, and even deal with a Zeppelin.
Who will end up with the secret? A secret that could destroy a city over night, with all the millions inside!
A delight to read and a fast page turner!
I have all the Fu Manchu books, and the two Cay Van Ash authored entries are my favorites in the series.
I loved this book. There are parts of it that are somewhat shocking because of its racist and colonial attitude, but it is representative of the times and I think it is important to understand that people have not always looked at things the way we do in the 21st century. This is not to condone the attitude, but to acknowledge it. If you are sensitive to this kind of thing the book will definitely offend you and I would not recommend it. Otherwise, it is a suspenseful and fast moving story, with clear good versus evil, and yet a certain admiration for the mysterious and very powerful Dr.Fu Manchu. It is not written by the original creator of Dr. Fu Manch, Sax Rohmer, but by Cay Van Ash, who also wrote another novel involving Sherlock Holmes and Fu Manchu. I actually found Cay Van Ash to be the better writer and like his books more than the originals.
