This is an interesting book that relates ghost stories from around the Golden State, but focusing mostly on central California where the author lives. The author (or compiler as he prefers to list himself) has collected ghost stories from a wide cross-section of people, and has listed them chronologically, by the date he heard about them. Mr. Reinstedt has tried to do some research into the stories, to see if there are corroborating stories and/or witnesses, and often provides the historical background of a haunted site before introducing the story.

I enjoyed the historical background as much as the ghostly happenings being reported. The book actually makes for an interesting travel guide as you learn about places such as the Robert Louis Stevenson House, The California Governor's Mansion, and the Queen Mary, which all have reported multiple haunted happenings. The author also gives a lot of information and ghost stories about many of the sites and small towns in California's Gold Rush area. However, since the ghost stories are arranged by the date he heard about them, and not in a regional fashion, you would have to keep referring to the index if you wanted to use this to find some haunted sites to visit on your trip around California.

Mr. Reinstedt's writing style is a little on the dry side, but he has put a lot of effort and research into these ghost stories and I appreciate his efforts. He has put together a nice photo section in the center, that shows the haunted sites listed that are public places. This is worth picking up if you enjoy ghost stories and history.
